A fall in an elderly person is never "just a fall." Hip fractures, head injuries, and the resulting hospitalisation can be life-altering. The good news: most falls can be prevented. Here are eight concrete tips I give every family with an elderly parent.

1
Install grab bars in the bathroomThe bathroom is the highest-risk room. Grab bars next to the toilet and inside the shower or bath area dramatically reduce falls. This is the single highest-impact home modification.
2
Remove loose rugs and floor obstaclesLoose rugs (dari, chatai) are a major fall hazard. Remove them or secure them with non-slip backing tape. Clear cables, bags, and clutter from walking paths.
3
Ensure bright lighting everywhereDim corridors and staircases are dangerous. Add motion-sensor lights along the path from bedroom to bathroom. Night-time bathroom trips in the dark are a major fall scenario.
4
Wear proper footwear indoorsFlip-flops, loose chappals, and socks on smooth floors are fall hazards. Non-slip indoor sandals or footwear with ankle support and a rubber sole are far safer. Never walk barefoot on wet floors.
5
Sit on the bed for a minute before standingPostural hypotension (BP drop on standing) causes many falls. Sitting on the edge of the bed for 30โ€“60 seconds before standing gives the BP time to adjust. Especially important in the morning.
6
Exercise for balance and leg strengthSimple exercises like standing on one foot (near a wall), heel-to-toe walking, and seated leg lifts improve balance and reduce fall risk measurably. Even 10 minutes daily helps.
7
Review all medicationsBP drugs, sleeping tablets, anti-anxiety pills, and diabetes medicines can all increase fall risk. An annual medication review can identify drugs that should be reduced or changed.
8
Get vision checked yearlyPoor vision from cataracts or age-related changes dramatically increases fall risk. An annual eye check and timely cataract surgery (if needed) is one of the best fall-prevention investments.

๐Ÿฉบ After Any Fall โ€” See a Doctor

Even a fall with no visible injury should prompt a medical review. The fall itself is a symptom โ€” it tells us that balance, strength, or medication is not optimised. I routinely review patients after falls and often find a treatable cause.
